Ever since The University of Texas at Austin opened its classrooms in 1883, the liberal arts have been at the heart of the school’s mission. And with our world-class programs in such fields as History, English, Philosophy, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Government, that’s as true today as it was more than a century ago.
The College of Liberal Arts offers more than 45 degrees through 25 academic departments and two-dozen centers and institutes. And we’re committed to the idea that understanding history, society and culture helps students better understand — and, ultimately, thrive in — the world beyond campus.
Central to that mission is our people.
Our 500 faculty include Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellows, members of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. More of the nation’s brightest scholars are joining our faculty each year, coming from other top private and public universities to be part of what we’re continuing to build in Austin.
Our professors conduct innovative research on everything from brain imaging to population trends. They conduct well-respected political polls and study topics as diverse as ancient Rome and 3 million-year-old fossils.
Many of our more than 10,000 students are off to equally impressive starts. They earn top national scholarships and study abroad on six continents. They go on to some of the best graduate and professional schools in the country or land jobs at Fortune 500 companies, in Congress and with schools and organizations throughout Texas.
The College of Liberal Arts’ commitment to providing a top-tier education, conducting groundbreaking research and preparing young minds for the world is central to The University of Texas’ history and future.
