Portuguese Flagship Program

Commonly Asked Questions

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible, you must be a full time UT Austin student in good standing, preferably as a Freshman or Sophomore in standing. Incoming freshmen will also be considered for the program.

I am not a UT Austin student, can I still apply?

You must be accepted for admission to UT Austin to be eligible for our program. If you are a transfer student, you must first gain UT Austin acceptance. You will be able to apply once you have started your studies here.

I am graduating within a year, am I still eligible?

We expect a commitment of between 3 and 5 years. You must be able to reach advanced proficiency in Portuguese to pursue the mandatory Capstone year in Brazil, and superior to receive Flagship certification, a process which normally takes 4 years. For this reason, a senior in first year Portuguese would not be a good match for our program.

I am a graduate student, am I eligible?

No, the PFP is aimed at undergraduate students. As a graduate student you should look for funding such as the FLAS, Teaching Assistantships, and UT Austin Graduate Fellowships.

How good does my Portuguese have to be?

You may be at any level of Portuguese, including a complete beginner if you are an incoming freshman.

I am a native speaker of Portuguese, am I eligible to apply?

It depends on your level of proficiency in Portuguese. If you speak and read Portuguese fluently and are already at or above the Superior level, this is not the best match for you. However, if your level is in the Intermediate to Advanced range of proficiency, you are welcome to apply.

Do I have to be a Romance Languages major?

No, the PFP accepts students from any major and is particularly interested in applicants that come from other disciplines such as business, engineering, journalism, natural sciences, and social sciences.

I am a dual Brazilian and American Citizen. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes, you are still eligible to apply. However, in order to take part in and receive funding for the Summer Immersion Programs and Capstone Program, you must be willing to relinquish your Brazilian citizenship.

I am graduating within a year, am I still eligible?

We expect a commitment of between 2 and 5 years. The goal is to reach superior proficiency in Portuguese at the end of the program. If you are a junior wanting to graduate in one year, this program may not be a good fit for you.

Do I have to major or minor in Portuguese to participate in the Portuguese Language Flagship?

No, it is not required that you major or minor in Portuguese to participate in the program. That being said, you will most likely end up achieving a minor in Portuguese with the amount of language classes you will be required to take throughout the program.

As a Flagship student, what is expected from me besides taking Portuguese?

All Flagship students are required to meet with their language tutors every week to practice their Portuguese. As a Flagship student, you are also required to participate in the majority of PFP events (some are mandatory) and all assessments. Depending on proficiency levels, Flagship students maybe advised to participate in a summer overseas or domestic program. Participation in a one-year capstone program in Brazil is mandatory for all students.

What are the requirements to become a Flagship Certified Graduate?

To be a Flagship Certified Graduate, students must have completed the Portuguese Flagship domestic program, Portuguese Flagship overseas program (including the internship), and achieved an ILR level 3/ACTFL Superior in Portuguese at the end of the program testing in Speaking and at least 2+/Advanced High in Listening and Reading.
