Title:  Enduring Material Unities

Abstract: I begin with a familiar problem concerning the survival by persisting macroscopic material objects of the loss of a spatial part. I elaborate in a novel way a solution to this problem that has been given before in a quite different context, in order to develop over the course of the paper a conception of persisting objects as enduring material unities (EMU). This is opposed to sortalism, four-dimensionalism, and any denial of the existence, strictly speaking, of macroscopic material objects. I situate (EMU) in relation to Hofweber and Velleman’s recent discussion of endurance, and end with a surprising reinstatement of an endurantist analogy between the position of material objects in space and time.
