Truman Scholarship awarded to Marissa N. Duswalt

Wed, March 18, 2009

Marissa Duswalt is a Plan II Honors and Nutrition/Dietetics dual-degree student planning to graduate in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. Her studies in the Coordinated Program in Dietetics focus on her special interests in nutrition, behavioral science, culinary arts, and food culture. Marissa is also recognized as a Dean's Distinguished Scholar in the College of Liberal Arts.

Marissa is committed to developing public health policy to reverse the national food and obesity crises. On campus, she leads a nutrition peer-education program, mentors a group of high school girls, and chairs a public service curriculum initiative. This summer she will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to coordinate a feeding program for malnourished children.

The Truman Scholarship awards approximately $30,000 to fund graduate study to 60 to 65 scholars each year. An undergraduate institution may nominate four candidates who have a clear record of community service, student government or other dedicated service or leadership activities. The field of candidates is narrowed to four nominees through a series of interviews.

The Truman candidates plan to purse a master's degree, a doctorate, or a professional degree such as a law degree or a Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Master of Education, Master of Public Policy, or Master of International Affairs. The Truman Scholarship funding provides graduate training for careers in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector with the goal of preparing "change agents" who will improve the ways that government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions serve the public.
