Course Description:

The primary focus of this course will be on the development of an effective and replicable cross-age mentoring program, matching selected Plan II students with mentees from KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) Austin College Prep, a local charter school serving low-income students in grades 5 - 8.

In addition to the opportunity to forge a mutually positive  and meaningful  relationship with a younger mentee, Plan II students will be provided an intensive immersion in issues related to educational opportunity (or lack thereof), and in the KIPP institutional  model as a demonstrably effective and rapidly growing strategy for addressing those issues.

Integral features of the course will include regular mentoring contacts; class discussions, readings, and guest speakers of relevance to mentoring and/or KIPP; personal journals; written reflections for KIPP staff about students’ individual mentees; and team reports focusing on a specific aspect or element of KIPP as an institution and educational model.

Through these avenues, students can anticipate acquiring enhanced knowledge and skills in at least the following areas:  teamwork and trust; mentoring strategies and skills; KIPP and related education reform efforts; civic engagement and service; program development; and social entrepreneurship.

Additional volunteer opportunities available with the P2K PlanTutoring program at KIPP Austin Collegiate High School. Plan II students of all years may apply. P2K PlanTutoring
