Plan II Commencement Convocation Speaker: Daron K. Roberts 

Daron Roberts is a former NFL coach who has been featured in ESPN the Magazine and Sports Illustrated. In the fall of his third year at Harvard Law School, Roberts decided to pursue a career in football coaching and wrote 164 letters to college and professional football teams. The Kansas City Chiefs offered Roberts a training camp internship for the 2007 season. After completing his internship, he joined the Chiefs in a volunteer capacity and was elevated to the position of assistant coach in 2008. That experience led to coaching stints with the West Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns.

A native of East Texas, Roberts holds a B.A. in Plan II Honors and Government from the University of Texas (2001), an M.P.P. from Harvard Kennedy School (2004) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (2007). A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School (2001), Daron served as Class President all four years.Daron K. Roberts, 2014

During his tenure at the University of Texas, Roberts was elected Student Government President. At the time, Texas was the largest public university in the United States. For his leadership, Roberts was awarded the university’s highest distinction – Most Outstanding Student in 2000.

Roberts has been recognized as one of the Harvard Kennedy School’s 75 Most Fascinating Alumni and the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders for cultivating a nonprofit football camp - 4th and 1, Inc. 4th and 1 offers free SAT prep, life skills development and football training to at-risk youth in Michigan, Texas and Florida. The camp has served over 300 students during the last five years.



Plan II Student Convocation Speaker:  Harrison Harvey

Harrison_HarveyBorn and raised in Houston, Harrison Harvey is an actor and playwright finishing his degrees in Plan II Honors and Theatre and Dance. As a performer, his credits at UT include Dead Man's Cell Phone, Dial M for Murder, River City, and Hamlet. Professional credits in Austin include The Poison Squad with The Duplicates, Balcony Play at ZACH Theatre, and currently Church of the Passionate Cat with Underbelly. He recently completed his honors thesis, for which he wrote a full length play. During his time at UT, he spent his summers working for Dell Financial Services. Harrison enjoys science fiction, iced coffee, and the company of his dog. He plans to spend his summer at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut, where he has been admitted for an intensive playwriting workshop.


Plan II Chad Oliver Teaching Award recipient: Neville Hoad, Department of English

Neville_Hoad_ChadO_2014The Plan II Chad Oliver Teaching Award, Formerly known as the Plan II Teaching Award, was first awarded in 1990 to Chad Oliver, who was a graduate of Plan II in the Harry Ransom years and later, for many years, a much-loved professor in Social Science 301. On his retirement, students voted to name the award for him. This honor has recognized one outstanding professor each year for his or her excellence in teaching and dedication to Plan II. Each year, the Chad Oliver Teaching award recipient is announced at the spring Plan II Honors Graduation Convocation. 

Neville Hoad, (Ph.D., 1998, Columbia University) teaches for the Department of English.  He has taught the Plan II World Literature course to first-year students for six of the last eight years.  His research interests include Victorian feminism; psychoanalysis (particularly Freud and Klein); contemporary feminist theory in French and English; lesbian and gay studies; queer theory; international human rights law pertaining to sexual orientations; sexuality and gender issues in Southern Africa.  Dr. Hoad is originally from South Africa.

**Ticket information for Plan II Honors Graduation**

Who needs a ticket, and why?

Graduating Plan II Honors seniors do NOT need a ticket for the Plan II Honors Graduation ceremony.  However, because seating is limited, all guests must have a ticket to enter the Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

How many tickets may I have?

Each graduating senior may pick up SIX (6) tickets for family and guests. 

Why only six tickets?

Because seating is limited, we will not have more tickets than available seats.  Therefore, we expect that seniors will not pick up more tickets than they intend to use. Please do not pick up six tickets if you know you will only have 4 or 5 guests! 

May I have more than six tickets?

If you really intend to use them (see above), but only after all seniors have had a chance to get their tickets (see below).

When may I pick up my tickets?

From MONDAY, APRIL 21 THROUGH FRIDAY, MAY 2, at the Plan II Honors Program office front desk. 

How do I get my tickets?

Each senior will be asked to sign for the number of tickets they are picking up.   NOTE:  This is the time to check the spelling of your name.

May I ask a friend (or another graduate) to pick up my tickets for me?

NO. You should absolutely NOT ask any friends to pick up your tickets or any extra Plan II graduation tickets.  It's a good way to get NO tickets.

Each Plan II graduating senior should claim only the number of tickets he/she needs for their own family members.  We have always had enough tickets for everyone who needs extra tickets, precisely because those who need fewer tickets only pick up the number of tickets that they actually need.  

What if I miss the deadline?

Tickets will not be reserved for seniors who do not pick up tickets on or before May 2.  See below.

How can I get more than six tickets?

BEGINNING ON MONDAY, MAY 5, all remaining Plan II Honors Graduation tickets will be released on a ''first-come, first-served'' basis to those seniors who expect more than 6 guests.  If you show up and tickets are available, you can get them.  If you show up late and they are gone....that’s that.



**Plan II Graduation Ceremony Information**

Where and when do I have to be on the day of Graduation?

SENIORS MUST ARRIVE at FAC 21 at 8:00 am (EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!) on Saturday, May 17, 2014.  (YES, REALLY!)

Where is FAC 21?

FAC 21 is the auditorium at ground level on the Texas Union side of the Flawn Academic Center. You may enter through the glass doors off the Union patio (across from Wendy's) or from the 1st floor lobby of the FAC (at entrance to Undergraduate Library) go down the stairs at the east end (Union-side end) of the lobby.

Where and when should my family gather?

Your family should gather outside of Hogg Auditorium.  The doors will not open until 8:30 am., and seating is ''first-come, first-seated.''  THERE IS NO RESERVED GUEST SEATING.  Disregard ''balcony'' or ''orchestra'' designation on tickets.  We will make accommodations for family members in wheelchairs.

Give your family/guests their tickets BEFORE SATURDAY!  You will not be with them for at least one hour prior to the ceremony.

What should I bring with me to the ceremony?

Your cap and gown!  It's more about what NOT to bring with you.  Do not bring any items that will not fit in your pockets or a small purse that can tuck under your gown. There is NO place to leave items during the ceremony-- the room will not be "manned" or locked and you will NOT return to this room after commencement. Do not bring items for your guests/family members: you will not see each other before the ceremony.

How long will the ceremony last?

Typically the ceremony lasts for about two hours.  The reception in the Texas Union Ballroom is scheduled to begin at 11am. 

What if I or my family has special needs?

Special services are available to accommodate needs for individuals with disabilities through prior arrangements. If you or a family member require accommodations or adaptive equipment, please contact Phillip Dubov (512 471-2960) at least five days prior to Commencement activities. Campus resources and a map with details of accessibility on campus are available at Disability Resources Home. 

Students needing accommodations should also work with Services for Students with Disabilities (512 471-6259; TTY 512 471-4641). 

Will there be parking available?

There is no 'regular' parking on campus.  Parking in all UT garages that day is free. The closest University Parking Garage is at 24th and San Antonio

What about disabled parking?

There will be limited Disabled Parking at the Hogg Memorial Auditorium.  Guests with mobility impairment may also be dropped off at the front of Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

Where and when is the reception being held?

Immediately following the ceremony (approximately 11am), a reception will be held in the Texas Union Ballroom, right next door to Hogg Auditorium.  This is an informal gathering.  No tickets are required, and attendance is optional.   Light refreshments will be on hand.

**University-wide Ceremony Information**

No tickets are required for guests at the Saturday evening University-wide ceremony. Seating for guests is on a first come, first served basis.
Degree candidates participating in the evening Commencement on May 17th are required to present a ticket when lining up for the Grand Procession. Tickets will be available beginning Monday, May 5, at the Texas Performing Arts Box Office and the Frank Erwin Center  Box Office. Tickets are for degree candidates only and are free of charge. Tickets are not available by phone. They must be picked up in person by presenting a UT ID.
Procession tickets may be picked up at the following locations beginning Monday, May 6:
