Liesl Nydegger, PhD, MPH, CHES is an Assistant Professor in Health Behavior and Health Education and Director of the Gender Health Equity Lab in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Nydegger earned her Ph.D. in Health Promotion Sciences with a concentration in Global Health, and her Master's in Public Health from Claremont Graduate University, School of Community and Global Health. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Center for AIDS Intervention Research, Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Nydegger was awarded a Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship in 2012-2013 that took place at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Dr. Nydegger's research interests focus on sexual health equity among vulnerable and underserved populations such as people who engage in problematic substance use and racial/ethnic minorities who experience health disparities. Specifically, she is interested in HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk and prevention by considering individual- (e.g., substance use, survival sex), interpersonal- (e.g., intimate partner violence, childhood sexual and physical abuse), and structural-level factors (e.g., substandard/unstable housing, poverty, and structural racism/sexism). Dr. Nydegger’s current research combines these multiple levels to develop theory-based interventions to prevent HIV/STIs and violence among women of color.
