Biography

Elizabeth Jelsma's major research interests include the effects racial and gender discrimination stress on health and well-being in African American adolescent populations. She is especially interested in how high-effort coping strategies such as John Henryism affect adolescent psychological functioning and academic achievement. In addition, she studies how maternal racial and gender discrimination concerns influence African American mothers' academic expectations for their children.
