Wes is a doctoral student in the Educational Policy and Planning program in the College of Education.  His research interests include teacher labor markets, the effects of market based school reforms, and policies that influence integration and diversity.  Prior to pursuing a PhD, Wes spent seven years as a classroom teacher in New York and Austin.  In New York he taught middle school math and science at public and charter schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan.  Upon returning to Austin, he accepted a position within the Austin Independent School District as an Instructional Specialist where he developed curricula and intervention plans.

Originally from Austin, Wes attended The University of Texas as an undergraduate, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in the College of Education.  While teaching in New York he earned his M.A. in the Sociology of Education with a focus on Education Policy from New York University.  Wes was a 2016 Archer Fellow in Washington D.C. where he worked at the U.S. Department of Education in the Office of Planning, Evaluation and Policy Development. He is the recipient of two University Graduate Fellowships and is serving as an editorial board member for the Texas Education Review research journal.  Wes also has research experience on two current faculty-led projects, investigating the choice sets of community college transfer students and the organizational effects of teacher turnover. He currently holds an appointment as a Field Supervisor in the UT teacher preparation program, where he mentors pre-service teachers as they complete their student teaching degree requirement.
