"Picture Quality: Neuroscience Meets Video Engineering"

February 20, 3pm - 4pm, NHB 1.720

Hosted by Dr. Hiroshi Nishiyama

Abstract: In this talk I will discuss the topic of picture quality assessment and its underpinnings in visual neuroscience. I will discuss both leading Reference and No-reference models of picture quality, and will describe leading neuroscience-based picture quality models in each category: the (Reference) Structural Similarity (SSIM) Model, and the (No-reference) Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE) Model. These models find engineering applications ranging from digital television and digital cinema to digital camera design. Both models can be understood in terms of basic retino-cortical circuit models, basic perceptual masking principles, perceptually relevant models of natural picture statistics, or some combination of these.

Professor Al Bovik holds the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair at The University of Texas at Austin. He has received numerous awards including the 2015 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has been Director of the Laboratory for Image & Video Engineering at UT-Austin since 1984
