"Mate Competition in Our Gods and Politics"

Tuesday, September 24 • 12 pm
SEA 1.332 (Hakes Library)

Abstract: Throughout our evolution, violent male mate competition has been a powerful selective pressure shaping the psychology of our daily lives. Deconstructing our religions and political institutions reveals the scars of this violent past—in the personalities of our male gods, and our political orientations and policy preferences. Garcia’s talk will explore how male reproductive strategies have shaped the ways we worship, make war, and influence whether we support policies such as affirmative action, equal rights for women, and foreign policy, and, lastly, whether we are inspired or repelled by the words of a president.
