Abstract: Aging is the principal risk factor for cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease. From worms to humans, neuronal aging is associated with decay in cellular function and increased risk for disease pathologies. Dr. Richardson’s work exploits the “ageless” alternate organismal state of C. elegans to understand how neurons age and how to keep them young. She discovered a genetic manipulation that de-couples neuron morphological aging from animal aging, and went on to describe the mechanism through which this manipulation stalls the growth of a specific neuron’s dendrite. This work suggests first, that suppression of endocytosis may be a general mechanism to stall aging, and second, that neurite morphogenesis involves a balance between dendrite stabilization and outgrowth.
