Biopsychology, sociobiology and animal communication


Del Thiessen studied at Denver University and San Jose State University, completing his Ph.D. in Biopsychology at the University of California at Berkeley. He continued his research career at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California, moving to the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Psychology, where he is Professor of Evolutionary Psychology and member of the Institute of Neuroscience.

With his colleagues he has published five books in behavior genetics and over 250 articles in animal and human behavior. "Bittersweet Destiny: The Stormy Evolution of Human Behavior" (Transaction Publishers, 1996) is his latest attempt to integrate evolutionary theory and philosophy. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the American Psychological Society, the National Association of Scholars, Human Behavior and Evolution Society, Southwestern Comparative Psychological Association, the Society for the Study of Social Policies, International Society for Research on Aggression, the European Sociobiological Society, and the Behavior Genetics Association. He is listed in Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. For the past 25 years his research has focused on evolutionary mechanisms of reproduction and social communication. He teaches courses in Evolution of Human Behavior, Comparative Psychology, and Biopsychology. His hobbies include fiction writing, billiards, and magic.
