Psychology Departmental Funding

Sources of financial support available to graduate students through the University and the Department of Psychology are fellowships, graduate research assistantships (GRAs) and teaching assistantships (TAs). The Department of Psychology is currently able to provide half-time (20 hours/week) TA or RA support to almost all of its current students who do not have fellowships or other sources of support. We offer such support for a minimum of four years. It is probable that this level of support will be available for 5 years.

Support is, of course, contingent upon satisfactory progress through our program. The standard appointment period for a TA or GRA is 20 hours a week. The current semester stipend for a 20-hour per week appointment for first-year students is $6,842. It is $7,537 for students with more than 30 hours of graduate credit.

The stipends for GRAs are comparable. Students from out of state who are employed for 20 hours per week as a GRA or TA pay the resident tuition rate. Moreover, TAs appointed for 20 hours a week receive a tuition assistance of $3,784 per semester which helps with the cost of tuition for the required minimum registration of nine hours (three courses) minus Federal Income Tax (Texas does not have a state income tax). The faculty sponsor typically pays the tuition for GRAs.

Students who are employed for 20 hours per week as either GRAs or TAs are eligible for staff benefits which includes group health insurance and premium payments for this insurance A limited number of fellowships, awarded on a competitive basis, are available to first-year graduate students. Departmental faculty nominates students for these fellowships.

We encourage students to seek external support from sources such as the National Research Council, the National Science Foundation, and private foundations. Students who receive external support also qualify for the residential tuition rate. The Office of Student Financial Services administers the federal loan program.
