Casual teen sex linked to higher depression rates
Kathryn Paige Harden, Assistant Professor of Psychology

Dr. Paige Harden is one of a team of researchers involved in a study of sexually active teens for whom casual sex may be an indicator of depressive symptoms or clinical depression. The study, led by Jane Mendle at Cornell University, found that sexual "hookups" increased a teenager's odds for depression. It had no significan effect, however, for those in a committed relationship. Their research has been published online in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology
