Spring 2014 Newsletter - Welcome from the Chair

This marks the third edition of the Psychology Department Newsletter. Although the previous ones were full of thrills and spills, this one may very well blow your mind. OK, mind-blowing may be a bit hyperbolic — but
the stories by Tamara Kowalski (with help from Dave Collins) will certainly interest you.

If you haven't visited the Psychology Department recently, I urge you to drop by and check out the new art work in the Seay Building. The first article in the newsletter describes a thoughtful and dramatic exhibit by local artist Jennifer Chenoweth that maps the psychological state of the Austin area. You can fill out a brief questionnaire so that your own emotional data can be added to her gorgeous hedonic maps.
You will also want to read about some new research by Dr. Paige Harden. Paige is one of our up-and-coming faculty members who is studying the genetics of risk-taking behavior in adolescents. Her work takes a new look at the interactions between genes, families, and social experiences.
Given the ever-tightening funds for higher education, the final story on three new endowments for the Psychology Department should interest you.  As you read about the Dianne and Jerry Grammer Excellence Fund for Mental Health, the Hixon Fellowship in Statistics, and the Jennifer J. Malin Endowment, you will see how so many people in the UT community are helping to build a top research and training program.  For those of you who have helped fund our department, thank you.
Enjoy the newsletter and keep your mind-blowing experiences to a minimum. I say this as a psychologist.
