Film Screening: TAXI

Thursday Sep 14, 2017 7:30 PM | AFS Cinema, 6406 N I-35 Suite 3100, Austin, TX 78752

Jafar Panahi, Iran, 2015, DCP, 82 min. In Farsi with English. subtitles

Banned from directing films, Jafar Panahi drives a bright yellow cab through the streets of Tehran and encourages his passengers to share their opinions on everything under the sun. Sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, TAXI powerfully challenges what it means to make a film in contemporary Iran.

“In the midst of a bustling narrative … it’s the quietest interlude that proves the most powerful. As his niece calmly watches the world pass by through the passenger window, Panahi lingers on the shot long enough for us to take the point that this curious, intelligent little girl holds her nation’s future in her grasp, if only she can learn to think for herself.” – Trevor Johnson, Sight & Sound
