Fulbright Scholars Visit University Writing Center
Fulbright Program

In early August of 2017 the UWC and PCL staff hosted a writing/library workshop for eight Fulbright Scholars from various universities in Iraq. With areas of specialization ranging from neurolinguistics to American Literature, the scholars benefitted from presentations about publishing, writing processes, creating writing assignments, using the UT libraries website, preventing plagiarism, and other topics from Marc Musick (Senior Associate Dean in CoLA), Susan Schorn (Program Coordinator for the University Writing Flag program), faculty from Rhetoric and Writing, and staff from the UWC. Elise Nacca did a workshop on navigating the library website, tools and services, preventing plagiarism through assignment design, as well as citation management tools, including Zotero. Colleen Lyon led a workshop on fair use, copyright and identifying predatory publishers. Several of our subject liaisons, Dale Correa (Middle Eastern Studies), Janelle Hedstrom (Education), Gina Bastone (English and Women and Gender Studies) and a Graduate Research Assistant, Mitch Cota, held open consultations for scholars to navigate the subject specific databases and execute effective literature reviews. The scholars also met individually with UWC consultants and subject specialists, were provided with access to UT databases, and enjoyed the UWC space for several hours of sustained writing each day.
