Professor Annie Hill has co-authored an article with Lauren Martin titled, "Debunking the Myth of Super Bowl Sex Trafficking': Media Hype or Evidence-Based Coverage" in Anti-Trafficking Review. The authors compiled empirical data to challenge the popular narrative that large sporting events cause an increase in trafficking for sexual exploitation. In the article, they highlight the need for evidence when designing public awareness campaigns and demonstrate the success of such an approach for the 2018 Super Bowl in Minneapolis. They conclude that diverse stakeholders including NGOs, law enforcement, social service providers, and academics can effectively use an evidence-based media communication strategy, even when the evidence contradicts a dominant discourse about trafficking.
