Profesor Jo Hsu to join Department of Rhetoric and Writing beginning Fall 2020

We are excited to announce that Professor Jo Hsu will join our faculty in Fall 2020! Jo is currently an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Arkansas, where they serve as associate director of the Program in Rhetoric and Composition. They got their Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition at Penn State in 2016, and an MFA in Creative Writing, also at Penn State, in 2012.

Jo studies how populations marginalized by race, gender, sexuality, and/or disability use storytelling to disrupt and transform social scripts. They are currently at work on a book project entitled “A Heritage of Struggle: Storytelling as Collective Action in Trans and Queer Asian American Rhetorics,” and they have published scholarly essays in a number of peer reviewed journals, including Women’s Studies in Communication,Enculturation, Rhetoric Review, College Composition and Communication, Color Bloq, and Kartika Review. Jo’s courses highlight knowledges established by Indigenous rhetoricians, Black and Third World feminists, queer of color theorists, critical trans scholars, and disability theorists and activists, situating them at the center of their course syllabi as integral to the formations of intellectual conversations and social progress.
