Martha Newman, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies, will give an informal talk entitled:

Work as Spiritual Practice: Insights from a Medieval Monastery

Dr. Newman will discuss a collection of stories about visions and miracles which a German monk assembled around the year 1200. Specifically, she will explore an account of an apparition of the Virgin Mary that demonstrates the monks’ attitudes toward physical labor. She will also share some images of medieval manuscripts and talk about the challenges of working with these documents.  

A discussion will follow.
