Department of Religious Studies

Portfolio Requirements

(Master's and Doctoral)

  • Completion of 4 thematically related courses, for 12 hours of credit, in graduate level courses approved by the Graduate Advisor. You are especially encouraged to consider taking R S 383M, “Approaches to the Study of Religion,” or R S 384D, “Doctoral Seminar in Religious Studies.”

  • The student's portfolio must include coursework in at least two departments outside of the student's home department. This means that at least 2 of your 4 portfolio courses must be taken in other departments.

  • The four courses should have a clear theme and specialization, approved by the Graduate Advisor. Students are encouraged to take at least one course that explores theoretical approaches to the study of religion; such a course may be substituted for one of the four thematically related courses. View sample specializations
