In May and June of 2019, Prof. Azfar Moin gave the prestigious Radhakrishnan Memorial Lectures organized by the Oriental Institute and All Souls College, University of Oxford. While at Oxford, Prof. Moin also co-organized a conference with Prof. Alan Strathern at Brasenose College on “Sacred Kingship in World History: Between Immanence and Transcendence.” The two-day event (May 28-29) featured ten prominent scholars from religious studies, history, classics, anthropology, and comparative literature who spoke on the relationship between religion and power over the longue durée and across the diversity of human experience. The conference generated a lively discussion on the theoretical framework that Strathern and Moin had introduced in a pre-circulated paper. Overall, forty people participated as speakers, chairs, and registered audience.
