Newman Excellence Fund Established
Martha Newman

On October 3, 2017, the Department of Religious Studies received word that the Regents approved the official paperwork and that the Martha Newman Excellence Fund is fully operational. This Excellence Fund is dedicated to graduate student research and support will begin in spring. The Fund is the result of a departmental campaign last year to honor Prof. Martha Newman for her leadership at UT. Over the course of 14 years, Martha directed the Program on Religious Studies and then when the program became a department she served as its first Chair. During that time the Department also established a new doctoral program in Religious Studies, which is now in its seventh year with 21 students in the program. Six others have completed the program and have earned a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from UT and all six are now employed as faculty. Because of the generosity of many people, the Department has new resources for its work and a new way to show our appreciation to the Department’s founding Chair.
