RS Undergraduate, Matt Cooper, wins Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship

The Religious Studies Department is proud to announce that one of our students, Matt Cooper, was selected to receive an Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Scholarship (UEPS)! The UEPS competition is open to students across UT Austin with a GPA of 3.75 or higher, so Matt’s achievement is particularly notable.

We asked Matt, a Religious Studies and History double major, why he decided to major in Religious Studies and to fill us in on his plans for his senior year and beyond. Here is what he had to say:

As I'm from Austin originally, UT was always one of the schools at the top of my list, and it wasn't hard to make the decision to come here. I came in as a history major in the fall of 2012, in the Liberal Arts Honors program, and added Religious Studies later. What I love about the department are the classes themselves. Every class I have taken in the department has been absolutely fascinating, and I've loved every second. All of the professors have been very open and available for office hours whenever I have needed to talk to them, and I've appreciated them answering my many questions.

For senior year, I'm excited to be getting more involved in leadership positions in my church, where I’ll be working in a research position with my pastor, using some of the knowledge and skills that I have learned in Religious Studies classes to help out an institution that has been very important to me. After graduation, I plan to go to seminary for ministry, with my end goal being to pastor a church somewhere. I know that the knowledge I have learned in these classes will prove invaluable for my future career. I'm excited for the classes I have remaining at UT, and look forward to seeing where all of this takes me.

Congratulations to Matt!
