Picturing the 'People of the Book'

This symposium explores constructs of Jewishness and negotiations of ethnic, cultural, and religious identity in visual media. The day-long event features presentations by five scholars involved in the field: Rachel Garfield, Artist and Lecturer in Fine Art, Goldsmiths, University of London; Norman Kleeblatt, Susan and Elihu Rose Chief Curator, The Jewish Museum; Tara Kohn, Ph.D. Candidate, Art History, University of Texas at Austin; Laura Levitt, Director of Jewish Studies and Associate Professor of Religion, Temple University; and Laura Wexler, Professor of American Studies, Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Yale University. The panels will be moderated by Robert H. Abzug, Director, Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies and Oliver H. Radkey Regents Professor of History, Professor of American Studies, University of Texas at Austin and Cherise Smith, Assistant Professor of Art History, University of Texas at Austin.

Part of Lectures on Art in the Black Diaspora, which is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History, College of Fine Arts and the Warfield Center for African and African American Studies. Sponsorship provided by the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies and Arthouse at the Jones Center.
