In Front of Strangers I Sing: Poems of Witness & Courage

In conjunction with Light / The Holocaust & Humanity Project.

Sun, March 11, 2012 | Badgerdog Literary Publishing @ 3710 Cedar Street

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Badgerdog Literary Publishing invites writers of all ages to consider written works of witness and respond through poetry and performance.

In this performance, local writers of all ages read original poems inspired by "witness" writers--those who recorded their experiences during times of conflict. These writers include Paul Celan, Osip Mandelstam, Frederico Garcia Lorca, George Oppen, and Irina Ratushinskaya, among others. Their artistic accounts of history allow us to empathize and remember, and to celebrate the courage in recording such stories at great personal risk. This performance will include original works of witness along with local writers' poetic responses.

Presenters include students from Austin ISD, Manor ISD, and Del Valle ISD schools, in addition to writers 50 and older participating in Badgerdog's Silver Voices in Ink creative writing programs, which take place in community centers throughout Austin.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information about Badgerdog Literary Publishing,
