Polish Studies Endowment Scholarship for Summer/Fall 2014

Study Polish language and culture in Poland!

Funded by the Polish Studies Endowment at The University of Texas at Austin and made possible by the Austin Polish Society and various individual donors.


The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies is offering ONE competitive $1,200 scholarship to be used in the summer or fall term of 2014 for the study of Polish language and culture in Poland.  These funds must be used to cover travel, housing, tuition or other related research costs while in Poland for:

- Studying Polish language abroad (Summer program, at least 4 weeks/Fall semester), OR

- Conducting research abroad, if already proficient in Polish (can be enrolled in ISR if doing research during a long semester).

Eligibility requirements include:

  • undergraduate or graduate status in any discipline at UT-Austin, and in good academic standing;
  • may NOT be combined with other major grant/scholarship funds (ie. can not be a FLAS recipient at the same time);
  • recipient must agree to write a short article to be published in area newsletters and online describing the study/research abroad experience in Poland;
  • recipient must agree to do a short presentation about the study/research experience in Poland for the Austin Polish Society (APS) Board of Directors upon return to Austin, Texas.

Submission Guidelines: 

To apply please submit application materials by the deadline: Friday, April 4, 2014.

The online application for the "Polish Studies Endowment Scholarship" is available through UT's Global Assist funding portal at 

  • Applicants must apply for the correct semester in which they intend to use the funds (ie. summer vs. fall application in Global Assist)
  • Applicants who are either choosing a non-UT study abroad program or doing independent research abroad should choose program code 300999 - INDEPEDENT STUDY & RESEARCH - SAO (OTHER FOREIGN)
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. A completed application includes:
  1. A Statement of Purpose outlining your objectives for studying Polish or conducting research in Poland, and how your travel will further your academic and/or career goals;
  2. One letter of recommendation that speaks to your interest in Poland and/or your language proficiency, if conducting research. Letters should also be submitted via the Global Assist online funding portal. You should personally request your letter as soon as possible. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATIONS AT THE LAST MINUTE, AS THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOUR RECOMMENDERS AMPLE TIME TO SUBMIT THEIR LETTER.
