Dr. Maya Charrad Invited to Speak at White House and UN

Dr. Mounira M. Charrad, Associate Professor of Sociology and Middle East Studies, will present her research on "Modernity within Islam: The Politics of Progressive Family Law Reform" at the White House on Wednesday, May 30, as part of a panel on “Exploring Communities of Muslim Women Throughout History.” The event has been organized by the White House Office of Public Engagement and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition to Dr. Charrad, there will be presentations by Dr. Afsaneh Najmabadi of Harvard University and Dr. Azizah al-Hibri of the University of Richmond and Karamah Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights.

Dr. Charrad was also invited to serve as an expert for the United Nations in the Expert Group Meeting on "Good Practices in Family Policy Making" organized by the Division for Social Policy and Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs held in New York from May 15-17. She made a presentation on "Family Law in the Arab World" and contributed to the drafting of the overall recommendations by the group of experts. The object of the meeting was to prepare recommendations to be included in the reports of the Secretary General at the upcoming sixty-eight session of the UN General Assembly.
