Sociology graduate student Vivian Shaw was selected for the Japan Foundation's 2014 Japanese-Language Program for Specialists in Cultural and Academic Fields award. This award includes tuition, accommodations, and other funding support to attend a six-month program at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute in Kansai (Osaka). This program is designed to provide graduate researchers and other specialists who need a strong command of Japanese language to conduct field-related work and research with an intensive residential training course of Japanese language.

Separately, Vivian was also admitted to the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies (IUC) program, an intensive 10-month training program in advanced Japanese in Yokohama. IUC is organized by Stanford University and is considered the premier American program for the teaching of advanced Japanese.
