Degree Information
Sociology is a Liberal Arts major and follows the Liberal Arts degree plan for a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Major requirements for the 2020-2022 catalog
30 hours of Sociology coursework (including 18 hours upper-division and 18 hours in residence) as follows:
- SOC 302 Intro to Study of Society with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 317L Intro to Social Statistics (or approved substitution) with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 327M Intro to Social Research with a grade of C or higher* (SOC 317M if taken prior to Fall 2020)
- SOC 379M Sociological Theory
- 18 additional hours of SOC elective with a minimum of 12 hours upper-division
Sociology majors are required to complete a transcript-recognized minor or certificate outside of Sociology, unless the student has a second major. A complete list of minors offered in the College of Liberal Arts is available here and certificates can be found here.
*Students may only enroll in SOC 327M twice, and must receive permission to enroll in the course for a second time.
Students must complete SOC 327M and SOC 379M in residence at UT Austin. Transfer courses will not be accepted.
Major requirements for the 2018-2020 and 2016-2018 catalogs
30 hours of Sociology coursework (including 18 hours upper-division and 18 hours in residence) as follows:
- SOC 302 Intro to Study of Society with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 317L Intro to Social Statistics (or approved substitution) with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 317M Intro to Social Research with a grade of C or higher* (SOC 327M if taken in Fall 2020 or later)
- SOC 379M Sociological Theory
- 18 additional hours of SOC elective with a minimum of 15 hours upper-division
Sociology majors are required to complete a transcript-recognized minor outside of Sociology or a certificate to complete the minor requirement, unless the student has a second major. Major requirements for catalogs 2014-2016 and earlier
27 hours of Sociology coursework (including 15 hours upper-division and 18 hours in residence) as follows:
- SOC 302 Intro to Study of Society with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 317L Intro to Social Statistics (or approved substitution) with a grade of C or higher
- SOC 327M Intro to Social Research with a grade of C or higher* (SOC 317M if taken prior to Fall 2020)
- SOC 379M Sociological Theory
- 15 additional hours of SOC elective with a minimum of 12 hours upper-division
Sociology majors are required to complete a minor consisting of 12 hours coursework in another field of study with a minimum of 6 hours upper-division and 6 hours in residence.
Sociology minor for students in other majors
Beginning with the 2016-18 catalog students in majors other than Sociology can pursue a transcript-recognized minor in Sociology. The minor consists of 15 hours of Sociology coursework: SOC 302 and 12 hours additional hours of SOC courses, including 6 hours upper-division and 9 hours in residence.
