Film Screening: 'Bhopali'

Sun, October 9, 2011 | Texas Union Theater (UNB 2.228)

6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

AID Austin invites students and faculty of the South Asia Institute to a screening of the award-winning documentary, 'Bhopali', followed by a discussion with the director, Van  Maximilian Carlson, on October 9th, 2011.

Bhopali is a feature documentary about the survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster: In 1984, a leak of toxic gas from a pesticide factory in Bhopal, India operated by the US corporation Union Carbide (now owned by Dow Chemical) killed 20,000 and left hundreds of thousands more with severe health problems. The site of the factory remains contaminated by toxic waste, devastating the long-term health of Bhopal's inhabitants and leaving their groundwater undrinkable. Director Max Carlson spent a year in Bhopal witnessing the daily struggles of the survivors and their battle for justice. Bhopali picked up awards (including 6 'Best Documentary'  prizes) at film festivals across the country in 2011, and we're looking forward immensely to the screening and hearing Max's first-hand account of the ongoing disaster in Bhopal.
