Dr. Ute Hüsken is Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Oslo (Norway) and heads the project “Initiation, Priestly Ordination, Temple festivals: Ritual Traditions in the South Indian Temple City of Kancipuram” at the Collaborative Research Center “Dynamics of Ritual” at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). Her research interests include the disciplinary code for Theravada Buddhist nuns, the transitional rites of the Vaikhanasas in South India, and ritual theory. Major publications: Die Vorschriften für die buddhistische Nonnengemeinde im Vinaya-Pitaka der Theravadin (1997); Visnu’s Children: Prenatal Life-Cycle Rituals in South India (bookwith- DVD publication, forthcoming); edited volumes: Words and Deeds: Hindu and Buddhist Rituals in South Asia (2005); When Rituals Go Wrong: Mistakes, Failure, and the Dynamics of Ritual (2007).
