Pakistan Roundtable

Mon, November 5, 2007 | Texas Union Eastwood Room 2.102

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Dear Colleagues: as you know from seeing the news over the weekend, the political situation in Pakistan has become quite dire. After declaring a state of emergency, or de facto martial law, a number of political and civil society leaders have been detained and/or placed under house arrest. These include Asma Jehangir, the well known civil rights lawyer, Imran Khan, cricketer turned politician, and I. A. Rehman of the Human Rights Commission, among “hundreds” of others, according to AP wire services.

The South Asia Institute would like to call an open meeting to discuss the situation in Pakistan. The purpose of this meeting is to share our thoughts and views of what is taking place in order to help make sense of these ongoing events. Through this process, we hope also in a small way to help ease the concerns and fears of those with family and friends in Pakistan.
