Akshaya Avril Tucker wins Morton Gould Young Composer Award

Congratulations to former Music Composition student Akshaya Avril Tucker for winning a 2019 Morton Gould Young Composer Award from the ASCAP Foundation!

Last spring, Akshaya worked with the South Asia Institute to bring Hindustani Vocalist Saili Oak to UT Austin where she performed at the Butler School of Music and gave workshops. Saili performed several pieces by Akshaya, who graduated with an MA in Ethnomusicology in May 2018. The March performance of Akshaya's Three Songs can be viewed online (part 1 and part 2).

Saili performed Akshaya's compositions again in January 2019 with the Musica Nova Orchestra in Phoenix. Saili has also recorded two of Akshaya's string quartet bhajan arrangements for Akshaya's album Beyond, which will soon be available through digital streaming.

Akshaya's latest composition Saath: Strung Together will be performed on May 31 at the Blanton Museum of Art.
