Miguel González-Gerth, 1926-2017

Miguel González-Gerth, Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese, who died this summer at the age of 90, taught for over thirty years in the S&P Department and also maintained a strong involvement with the Harry Ransom Center (HRC). Born in Mexico, he received his undergraduate degree in 1950 at UT, where his mentor was Harry Ransom, and completed his Ph.D. in 1973 at Princeton. In the late 1960s, he returned to UT as a faculty member. As well as being a classroom teacher and dissertation director, he was known for his original poetry, his translations, and his successful efforts to maintain intellectual and cultural life at UT. He organized numerous symposia and conferences and arranged the visits to UT of such luminaries as Octavio Paz and Elena Poniatowska.

González-Gerth was Acting Chair of Spanish and Portuguese during 1983-1984 and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts during 1985-88 as well as serving on multiple university-wide committees. From 1972 to 1978, he was editor of Texas Quarterly, the journal founded by Ransom to spotlight his special initiative, the HRC.

González-Gerth received the Pro Bene Meritis Award, the highest honor bestowed by the College of Liberal Arts, in 2006. He is survived by his wife, the Mexican writer Tita Valencia.
