Congratulations to Dr. Naomi Lindstrom!

The award will be used to pursue a project on modern-day transformations of prophetic and, in some cases, apocalyptic discourse in the work of Latin American Jewish creative intellectuals. The study examines novels, poetry, graphic novels, and films that feature various types of visionary discourse with links with the books of the Hebrew prophets and the genre of apocalyptic literature. The study will cover a period from the early 1930s to the twenty-first century. Over this period of time, there are considerable continuities, but also some notable shifts in the social sins denounced in the neo-prophetic harangues and invective. Concern over the rise of fascism and anti-Semitism is strong in the 1930s; in, the mid to late twentieth century, there is a spirit of rebellion against conformity, conventions, and narrow-mindedness. As the twentieth century ends and the twenty-first begins, globalization accelerates, and the writers and filmmakers exhibit a more transnational perspective. Increased awareness of threats to the environment manifests itself in apocalyptic visions of an Earth laid to waste, not by the divine punishment threatened by the Biblical prophets, but by the irresponsibility of its human inhabitants.

Congratulations, Naomi!
