Congratulations to Prof. Sonia Roncador for receiving the Humanities Research Award (2017-2018)
Dr. Sonia Roncador

Congratulations to Sonia Roncador, winner of the prestigious College of Liberal Arts, Humanities Research Award, 2017 for her book project entitled, Imperial Trash: The Portuguese in the American Tropics (Brazil, Trinidad and Hawaii)

In her book,  Roncador interrogates the myths of white slavery and white genocide in the early discourses of Lusophone migrations across the American tropics. Drawing from literary and archival research Roncador examines the hemispheric imaginaries of Portuguese servitude and degeneration at the face of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century imperial migrations of mainland Portuguese, Azorean and Madeiran to the tropicalized environments in Brazil, the British Caribbean and Hawaii. Given its transatlantic geographic scope, the study necessarily engages with the juxtaposing contexts of African slavery, Asian, and European indentured servitude, as well as Portuguese and British imperialisms. It also engages with the “human acclimatization” debate guiding the racial and immigration politics in these tropical, Portuguese-speaking former colonies and enclaves.
