Sergei Rachmaninov

Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. He is known for his melodicism, expressiveness, and rich orchestral colors in musical style.

Born into a musical family, Rachmaninoff took up the piano at the age of four. in 1892, at the age of 19, he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, having already composed piano and orchestral pieces. in 1897, 5 years later, following the negative reactions to his Symphony No. 1, he entered a four-year depression until successful therapy allowed him to complete his famous Piano Concerto No. 2 in 1901. Many of Rachmaninoff's works features the piano; he himself explored the expressive possibilities of the instruments through his own skills as a pianist.
