Developing and Assessing Intercultural Communication Skills: Where Language and Culture Meet

Half-day workshop

Fri, July 29, 2016 | CLA 1.302B, Glickman Conference Center, The University of Texas at Austin

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Dr. Betty Lou Leaver (Defense Language Institute) and Dr. Thomas J. Garza (UT Austin) will lead this workshop on developing and assessing intercultural communication skills in the foreign language classroom.

The connection between language and culture, while long established, has often been difficult for instructors to realize in the classroom. Recently published guidelines for Intercultural Communication (ICC) may provide a framework that offers practical and effective recommendations for addressing cultural instruction. This workshop will provide teachers with both techniques for addressing ICC in their language classes, as well as developing activities and materials for attaining cultural proficiency.

This workshop runs 10am to 3pm and will be held in the College of Liberal Arts building, 1.302b on the UT-Austin campus. CPE credit is available.

A nominal tiered fee is charged to cover materials, refreshments, and lunch:

  • All students (including graduate students): $5 Use discount cod ICCStudent when entering payment information.
