Culture of Close Listening: Listening Exercises as a Facilitator for Teaching Phrases and Idioms in the Language Classroom

Listening, whether it be through a class activity or authentic primary sources such as a film or television program, is often the space in which language students are first exposed to cultural phrases and idioms. This presentation will discuss how close listening activities can be used as a springboard to demonstrate for students how cultural phrases and idioms are used in context, and as supporting exercises which can further encourage them to integrate the phrases as they continue to develop language production skills. We will discuss the transition from isolating such phrases via close listening to utilizing them appropriately in original contexts, and share example activities from an Arabic language classroom on how close listening integration encourages students to be more successful in both comprehending and deploying cultural idioms and phrases.
