1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Juan Pinto from the Department of Middle Eastern Studies will discuss how being part of a language community (heritage, study abroad, etc.) can serve as a powerful motivator for language learning. Today, there is a growing body of independent language learners who have made the web their community center and who are using modern tools and methodologies to engage in interpersonal communication, share pedagogical materials, and even explore deep cultural topics with other members of this global community. How can we, as language educators, help our students engage with and become members of this community? How does empowering students in this way affect long-term motivation? What implications does this have for the teacher's role as the primary disseminator of knowledge?
