Language Matters!

This presentation will discuss the discrepancies between the original text and its translation. Examples provided will demonstrate how simple synonyms or near synonyms and simple antonyms or near antonyms fail to provide an understanding of cultural context, nuance, and usage for the language learner. In order to solve this problem, a teacher can create his/her own dictionary with more culturally correct definitions. Films also serve as a great learning device because of their depiction of culture in facial expressions and hand gestures. These methods can help learners comprehend the language in a fuller socio-cultural perspective, not otherwise gained by a near-synonym or near-antonym dictionary definition.
