Language Matters: Translating Punctuation as a Metaphor for Literary Translation

Thu, February 15, 2018 | UNB 3.128, Sinclair Suite

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us for Language Matters with Marian Schwartz, the principal English translator of the works of Nina Berberova and the New York Times' bestseller The Last Tsar, by Edvard Radzinsky.

Ms. Schwartz’s presentation will focus on how punctuation functions differ from one language to another and how the sense the translator conveys through punctuation is actually a metaphor for the larger aesthetic question of exactly what the translator is trying to achieve in recreating a text in English. What guidelines are there to keep the translator on track?

Language Matters presentations apply to all languages!
