Symposium About Language and Society-Austin (SALSA)-2018

Fri, April 20, 2018

SALSA is an annual student-run conference to be held to be held April 20th and 21th, 2018 at the University of Texas at Austin. Now in its 26th year, SALSA has become internationally recognized as a prestigious venue for presenting new work on the sociocultural aspects of language and communication. Created through the joint efforts of students from the Anthropology, Linguistics, French and Italian Studies, and Communication Studies departments at UT, SALSA has evolved into a truly multidisciplinary conference with contributions from a wide variety of fields, including communications, foreign language education, political economy and ideology, media and technology studies, language vitality, cultural studies and folklore, and numerous language departments and area studies programs.

The prestige of SALSA is underscored by the distinguished scholars who continue to share their expertise as keynote speakers; many return as regular conference participants. This year we have confirmed four invited speakers who will present for the theme of Language in Society: Culture, Space, and Identity.

Keynote Speakers

  • Dr. Jacqueline Urla (University of Massachusetts Amherst)
  • Dr. Richard Bourhis (Université du Québec à Montréal)
  • Dr. James Slotta (University of Texas at Austin)
