Yiddish Folksong: A Two-Part Presentation

Dr. Itzik Gottesman and Ethel Raim present

Thu, September 26, 2019 | RLP 1.302B

4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Part 1: Dr Itzik Gottesman will talk on "The Life of the Yiddish Folksinger." Over the past 150 years Jewish folklorists have collected hundreds of Yiddish songs in Eastern Europe and in the United States but hardly ever wrote down even the smallest detail about the singer's life: how did they learn the song, where and when do they sing it? What does the song mean to them?

Part 2: Performance by Ethel Raim, a pioneer in bringing traditional Yiddish and Balkan vocal music to a wider American popular audience.
