2018 Professional Development Awards Announced!

The Texas Language Center is pleased to announce its Professional Development Award recipients for 2018! These awards are made to instructors of languages at UT who are seeking to develop new materials, courses, or methods for teaching their languages, or who would like to attend a conference or purchase materials in order to improve their teaching.

This year’s recipients, including graduate students, lecturers, and tenured or tenure-track faculty, are:

  • Yukie Aida, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies—2018 Conference in Japan.
  • Olla Al-Shalchi, Lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies—Iraqi Curriculum for Al-Kitaab.
  • Meghan Ackley, ESL Instructor in the International Office—Presenting: Teaching Politeness in American English to Graduate Students.
  • Marina Alexandrova, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies—Third-Year Russian Course
  • Karen Chilstrom, Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies —Live from Kaliningrad! A Virtual Exploration of a Russian Enclave.
  • Devon Donohue-Bergeler, Doctoral Candidate in Foreign Language Education and Assistant Instructor in the Department of Germanic Studies —Graduate Student German Instructors' Uptake of Drama-based Pedagogy: Implications for Teaching Development.
  • Steven Alcorn, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Spanish &Portuguese —Open Access Portuguese Advanced Writing and Grammar Textbook.
  • Bernadeta Kaminska, Lecturer in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies—ACTFL Convention.
  • Kelly Houck, Assistant Instructor in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies —Persian Typing Workshop
  • Anousha Shahsavari, Lecturer in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies—Improving the Advanced Proficiency in Persian at the University of Texas at Austin
  • Gautami Shah, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies—Strategies to Deal with Multilingual Translanguaging in Language Classrooms.
  • Naoko Suito, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies—Language Games on Mobile Devices.
  • Chikako Cooke, Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies—Japanese Instructor Continuing Education: Central Association of Teachers of Japanese (CATJ) Conference.

Look for these exciting projects to be presented in next year’s Language Matters lectures series, currently scheduled on mid-month Thursdays, 2pm to 3pm in the Union Sinclair Suite!
