2019 TX Foreign Language Teaching Excellence Awards Announced!
Yongfeng Liu Receiving her Award

The Texas Language Center is delighted to announce Yongfeng Liu and Andreana Marchi as the winners of the 2019 Texas Foreign Language Teaching Excellence Award! Each year, the TLC awards two foreign language educators—one UT faculty member and one graduate student Assistant Instructor—with a plaque and monetary prize, recognizing them for their superior knowledge of and enthusiasm for teaching language and culture.

The process of selecting a winner begins with student nominations of their instructors, which are then reviewed by members of the TLC Advisory Committee. Ms. Liu and Ms. Marchi were selected from over 240 nominations in 22 different languages.

Ms. Liu is a Chinese language Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies. Before teaching at UT Austin in 2016, she studied at Texas A&M University, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Donghua University. Her students cited her creative teaching methods, humor, patience, ability to create a comfortable learning environment, and her passionate, personal support. They noted that they leave her class feeling cared for and cherishing her inspirational advice.

Ms. Marchi is a Portuguese language Assistant Instructor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Before teaching at UT Austin in 2016, she taught Brazilian Portuguese at Middlebury College (2014-2016) and English for Specific Purposes in different universities in Brazil in the previous years. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD in Iberian and Latin American Linguistics at UT Austin. Her students noted that she creates a positive, inclusive atmosphere and challenges them to exceed their expectations. Her students regard her with the utmost respect, and are thankful for the opportunity to express themselves in her class and connect with her as their teacher and mentor. Many attributed their desire to pursue further Portuguese language study and to participate in Study Abroad to Ms. Marchi’s encouragement.

Both recipients exhibit exceptional achievement in language education with innovative teaching methods and, in doing so, have translated a passion for language and culture to their students.

The TLC is pleased to continue its tradition of recognizing extraordinary foreign language instruction by honoring these two amazing educators. These awards would not be possible without the support of the College of Liberal Arts, with special thanks to Dean Flores and Dean Raizen for acknowledging the importance of languages at UT-Austin.
