How do I learn a language?

Language courses will vary from department to department and language to language. However, you can expect certain elements in common whichever language you end up choosing.

  • Languages benefit from a “little and often” approach. Your language class will meet between three and five times per week.
  • We use language for reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and you can expect a balance between these four skills in class.
  • Language and culture are intimately connected: you cannot learn about one without the other.
  • Once you finish the language track (this varies between departments, but is often between fifteen and eighteen credit hours), you’ll be given the opportunity to take cultural content courses directed entirely in the target language. There’s no point learning a language if you’re not going to use it!
  • As you progress, you’ll have the opportunity to study abroad in a country that speaks the language you are learning: there’s no better place to learn than on the ground!
