Spring Festival of Play at Winedale

Young Shakespeareans, ages 8 to 16, will take the stage at the Winedale Theater Barn in Winedale, Texas on Saturday, April 28 as part of the annual spring Festival of Play. The day will feature two hours of performances by school groups from Austin and Gonzales. After the students regale audiences with their Shakespeare in the Barn, a family-friendly “Eeyore’s Birthday Party,” with traditional games, prizes, and birthday cake, will take place on the center grounds. They day’s festivities conclude with an evening performance of Julius Caesar by UT students participating in the university-level Shakespeare at Winedale program. Festival of Play performances are noon-2 p.m. Saturday in the Barn, to be followed 2-4 p.m. by the spring celebration of Eeyore. Both events are free and open to the public, though seating is limited.

Julius Caesar will be presented by the university’s spring Shakespeare at Winedale class at 7 p.m. Tickets for the evening play are $10 for general admission and $5 for students/UT ID holders and can be purchased online at or over the phone at (512) 471-4726. The UT students are also performing the same play the previous evening, Friday, at 7 p.m.

The Festival of Play is a highlight of the year for the public school students participating in this program. “All year long, we look forward to sharing the Winedale Theater Barn with these young students, many of whom have fallen in love with Shakespeare already in their classrooms,” said Shakespeare at Winedale Outreach Coordinator Clayton Stromberger. “When those kids step into the Barn for the first time, and realize they’re going to be able to perform on that stage – the same one where generations of UT students have performed Shakespeare – their excitement goes through the roof.  It’s a great day, and the kids go home tired, happy, and proud of their hard work."

Most of the participating students will also perform on the UT campus in May as part of the second public Outreach performances, the UT Children’s Shakespeare Festival.

Shakespeare at Winedale Outreach, housed in the English Department at the University of Texas at Austin, is a language arts and fine arts enrichment program designed to provide opportunities for meaningful learning and academic excellence for Texas schoolchildren, with a special focus on both emerging and advanced readers in grades 3 through 8, and on students in low-income communities.
